Be Brilliant at Work

leadership Dec 07, 2022

Loving what we do is a powerful force. It inspires creativity. It compels commitment. It creates resilience in the face of obstacles. Yet, many people are frustrated in their work, losing energy, and starting to look around. According to Gallup’s survey in 2017 only 33% of employees are engaged in their work and 42% say it is a good time to look for a quality job.

These statistics are impacting ministry, too. Leaders are struggling to keep their teams in-tact as people move on to new opportunities. As a leader, what can we do?

While there are many employee retention strategies, focusing on our personal engagement as leader can have a significant impact. The same Gallup study showed that 59% of employees are more likely to be engaged when they are supervised by highly engaged managers. But, how does a leader steer their own engagement and energy at work?

Let’s get started! Step back and explore what brings out your brilliance. Notice where you can focus on what you do best. Align what you do with what you love.

Explore Your Brilliance

Think back to a work experience where you were at your best. You felt energized, excited and engaged. You achieved a new level of experience, learning or understanding. Think of that moment when you were captivated by the experience and in retrospect it was a memorable turning point in your thinking, your life or your career.

  • What happened in that experience?
  • What did you do to make that happen?
  • What did others do to contribute to the experience?
  • How did it feel? What impact did it have on you?

Focus on Your Best Self

Notice what was important about this experience to you. It can help to share the experience with someone who will ask you curious questions and notice things you might miss. As you share your story . . .

  • What do you notice about yourself when you are at your best?
  • What set the stage for you to be at your best?
  • What themes do you see emerging about what inspires you to do what you do?
  • How do the themes that emerge influence your choices in this season of life?

Do What You Love

We hold engagement in our hands. We have a part to play in aligning what we do to our God-given brilliance. As you reflect on the themes that emerge when you are at your best, what is one step that you can take today to take your brilliance to the next level – and be energized by the work you do.  It can mean things like:

  • Delegating more effectively.
  • Partnering with someone who is strong in areas that frustrate us.
  • Engaging conversation with others to shift role or job duties if possible.
  • Learning what to say “yes” to and what to say “no” to.
  • Being strategic in your off-hours to stay OFF work.
